Order tracking app replacing a spreadsheet

A small web application for tracking jobs through defined stages with history and permissions.

Concept demonstration — not a client engagement

The problem

A hypothetical workshop tracks orders in a shared spreadsheet. Statuses are inconsistent, edits overwrite each other and there's no history.

Proposed approach

  1. Model orders, stages and roles explicitly in a database.
  2. Provide a board and table view with filters for each role.
  3. Record every status change with user and timestamp.
  4. Import the existing spreadsheet once, with a validation report.

Main components

  • Web application with role-based access
  • PostgreSQL data model
  • Audit history
  • CSV import and export
  • Email notifications on stage changes

What we would measure

In a real engagement we'd agree these measures and baselines with the client before starting.

  • Orders without a current status
  • Time spent compiling weekly status updates
  • User feedback after the first month
